Your average "dirt" with small stones etc. has a density of about 2-21/2. Gold has a density of 19.3. The thing that drives us all a little crazy with black sand is that it is relatively easy to separate the "dirt" from the gold but most of us find it much more difficult to separate the gold from the black sand.
